Fed: Queensland records first Christmas road fatality
SYDNEY, Dec 19 AAP - Queensland recorded the first road fatality of the Christmas period
overnight when a 50-year-old man died in a car crash at Nerang, on the Gold Coast.
A police spokeswoman said the man's sedan left the Nerang Connection Road at about
12.30am (AEST) - within half an hour of the road toll period opening.
She said the driver lost control when the vehicle hit a median strip as he attempted
to make a left turn.
It travelled across three lanes of traffic in Price Street and collided with a four-wheel
drive travelling west on Price Street.
The woman driving the four-wheel drive was not injured.
Last Christmas-New Year 71 people died on Australia's roads - 23 in Victoria, 14 each
in NSW and South Australia, 12 in Queensland, six in Western Australia and one each in
Tasmania and the Northern Territory.
(Eds: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 19 to 2359 January
4. Some states and territories have different periods.)
