SHANGHAI (AP) — Brazilian swimmer Cesar Cielo, cleared last week by a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing into doping, has won the men's 50-meter butterfly gold at the world championships.
Cielo, who broke into tears in his lane after touching first, finished in 23.10 seconds with two Australians, Matthew Targett and Geoff Huegill, in second and third.
Cielo and three teammates tested positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic at a meet in Rio de Janeiro in May. After the Brazilian swimming federation gave Cielo a warning, FINA, the world swimming governing body, appealed the decision to the CAS, which decided to uphold the Brazilian ruling.
Cielo said he consumed the drug in a contaminated batch of a food supplement he regularly use.
