Fed: Committee recommends Pacific Solution be scrapped

Government and opposition senators say the federal government should scrap the PacificSolution of processing asylum seekers offshore.

A committee report on the south-west Pacific recommends the government consider modifyingthe operation of its Pacific Strategy to allow for the removal of Nauru and Papua NewGuinea as refugee processing destinations.

The deputy chair of the committee, National Party Senator SANDY MACDONALD, has toldABC radio the senators unanimously support the recommendation to scrap the Pacific Solution.

The report also recommends that Pacific islanders could work in Australia as part ofa pool of seasonal labourers.

The committee's chairman, Labor Senator PETER COOK, says such a scheme will reshapeAustralia's immigration policy but would be more helpful to countries like Papua New Guineathan just providing aid.
