Fed: Liberals condemn alleged illegal acts at tent embassy
CANBERRA, April 14 AAP - The Liberal Party's federal council today condemned a spateof alleged violence and intimidation at the Aboriginal tent embassy in Canberra.
ACT opposition leader Gary Humphries proposed the condemnation motion, saying the tentembassy on the lawns of Old Parliament House had lost its sense of purpose after 30 yearsof existence.
He said a string of recent incidents showed something had to be done.
Mr Humphries said members of the embassy allegedly removing the coat of arms from OldParliament House was an example of behaviour which should be condemned.
"The embassy has become something very different to what it was originally meant tobe," Mr Humphries said.
"It was originally a vehicle to prick the conscience of white Australia."
That purpose had been superceded by moves towards reconciliation, he said.
Prime Minister John Howard is due to deliver the keynote address to the conferencelater this morning.
